The Student Affairs
Profession
A young profession, Student
Affairs has built a rich tradition centered on the holistic education of college and
university students. Although Student Affairs' title as a
"field" is of this century, work being done in the field is rooted in the
depth of history that describes Higher Education. Students' learning and living,
growing to be good citizens, are enhanced through the Student Affairs practitioners'
intentional efforts to provide students service, access, opportunity, guidance, and
experience. The educational value of learning, both inside the classroom and
outside the classroom, has built the presence of Student Affairs on today's campus.
Student Affairs creates environments and opportunities to engage students in their
education. To read more about the profession from documents known to reflect the
foundation of the field, please visit the sites listed on this page.
Student Affairs houses many disciplines, including residential living, food services,
counseling, judicial affairs, international affairs, student unions, financial aid,
multicultural affairs, career services, admissions, campus activities, Greek life,
recreation services, legal services, health services, and many other integral parts of
life on campus. The functions of Student Affairs are many, covering a variety of
student needs and demands. Each campus has unique needs regarding their
students, which results in the differing bodies of resources one finds in Student Affairs
on every campus. Higher Education's face is constantly evolving as students,
technology, globalization, and the many homes of Higher Education transform. Student
Affairs, then, is experiencing tremendous growth and revitalization as it seeks to best
respond to the world around it and the people it serves.
